Sweden: Home of the Big Baltic Salmon
Though less well-known internationally, Sweden—and especially Swedish Lapland—is a prime destination for Atlantic salmon fishing, particularly prized for its large Baltic salmon. These fish, which belong to the same species as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), can exceed 25 kg (55 lbs), with specimens over 100 cm routinely caught in the country's wild rivers. The sheer size of these salmon is attributed to the rich food sources of the Baltic Sea, where they feed voraciously on herring and other baitfish before beginning their migration back to their spawning grounds.
The salmon fishing experience in Sweden offers two distinct opportunities. In the north, anglers are drawn to the pristine, free-flowing rivers of Swedish Lapland, where they can pursue these powerful fish in a remote and stunning wilderness setting under the famous Midnight Sun. Notable wild salmon rivers include the Torne, Kalix, Byske, and Lainio, each with its own unique character and a long tradition of fly and spin fishing. The season here typically runs from late May to the end of August, with the early summer often producing the largest "springer" salmon.
A completely different, but equally thrilling, experience can be found on the southern Baltic coast. Here, the focus shifts to ocean trolling for trophy-sized salmon. Areas like Hanöbukten and the waters off Simrishamn are internationally recognized as hotspots for this style of fishing. Trolling anglers from across Europe flock to these ports, especially during the peak spring season from April to June, to test their luck against the vast, open waters of the Baltic Sea in pursuit of a truly colossal salmon.
